Introduction
Welcome to the Adult Training Section of South East Scotland Scouts. It is important that the training being offered meets what you need and so additions to the programme and changes to dates and venues may be made to during the year. These will be notified to all Districts and Leaders through the Regional Newsletter and will appear on this website www.southeastscotlandscouts.org.uk, in the Training Diary.

Getting Started
Districts are committed to offer Modules 1, 2 and 3 or 4 as appropriate. An important part of getting started is Module 2, which results in a Personal Learning Plan that identifies what training you require and how that might be undertaken. Your Training Adviser will be able to discuss the training requirements and, after it has been undertaken, will help with putting it into practice.

Assistance for Districts to support this provision is available, if required, from the Regional Team. As Districts develop their support for Leaders, Training Advisers, Ongoing Learning and Training Records, they may also identify other modules which could fit into their programme. If a District wants to consider doing this then an early discussion with me is important so that we can ensure that the training being offered meets the required standards and fits into the wider programme.

Putting Training into Practice
Once your Personal Learning Plan has been agreed with your Training Adviser, you should book in for the courses you need as soon as possible. In some cases, alternative methods to the courses may be agreed. These resources are available from our training library available through Jim McCafferty. Whatever training method is undertaken, it is important that you show that your training has made the Scouting you offer better. Your Training Adviser will want to know how this has been achieved when discussing your progress with you. This enables the module to be completed.

Organisation
Modules will be run in a number of locations over the year to enable Leaders to have a wider choice of venue and date and to suit their home location. Each is being offered several times and in different venues. There are a number of benefits to this system - it is hoped that this will mean that:

  • Leaders do not have so long to wait for modules they require.
  • The locations used are convenient for Leaders. Venues have been drawn from Borders, East Lothian, Midlothian and several Districts in Edinburgh.
  • Trainers from across the Region are used.
  • Popular modules are offered more frequently.

To offer a broader choice this year, some of the modules have also been grouped into weekend programmes at Bonaly. In these cases you are strongly encouraged to stay for the weekend, as there are many benefits to be gained from the residential aspect and from completing a number of modules together. In particular Leaders will have the opportunity to meet people from other Districts and be able to share experiences more widely.
