Getting Started
Districts are committed to offer Modules 1, 2 and 3 or 4 as appropriate. An important part of getting started is Module 2, which results in a Personal Learning Plan that identifies what training you require and how that might be undertaken. Your Training Adviser will be able to discuss your training requirements and, after they have been undertaken, will help with putting them into practice.
Assistance for Districts to support this provision is available, if required, from the Regional Team. As Districts develop their support for Leaders, Training Advisers, Ongoing Learning and Training Records, they may also identify other modules which could fit into their programme. If a District wants to consider doing this then an early discussion with me is important so that we can ensure that the training being offered meets the required standards and fits into the wider programme.
Putting Training into Practice
Once your Personal Learning Plan has been agreed with your Training Adviser, you should book in for the courses you need as soon as possible. In some cases, alternative methods to the courses may be agreed. These resources are available from our training library available through Jim McCafferty. Whatever training method is undertaken, it is important that you show that your training has made the Scouting you offer better. Your Training Adviser will want to know how this has been achieved when discussing your progress with you. Examples of what is expected are given during each module and are available on our website in the training section. These enable each module to be completed.
Organisation of Training Opportunities
A review of last year’ programme has been undertaken. As a result we are offering sectional training on three weekends rather than two, whilst reducing the number of stand-alone modules by a few. The third of these weekends will try to follow the successful pattern of manager training last year wherein the last ‘block’ was run based on offering the specific modules requested by leaders near the time – we shall try to meet specific needs as well as we can. A fourth weekend covering modules 16 to 18 (Nights Away etc.) will continue to be offered in June and will necessarily be residential.
In addition this year, we are planning to take some training modules out to small groupings of Districts (‘Local Training’) where, working with local leaders on a Saturday or Sunday, we aim to help reduce some of the backlog of training. We intend to offer this twice during the year, initially looking at personal learning plans, Training Advisers and several early modules and, later in the year, offering other modules and helping with aspects of validation (“putting training into practice”).
This will be offered to three groupings within the Region:
a. Borders & Midlothian Districts
b. East Lothian, Blackford, Leith & Portobello Districts
c. Haymarket, Inverleith, Morningside & Pentland Districts
Modules will again be run in a number of locations over the year to enable Leaders to have a choice of venue and date and to suit their home location. Each module is being offered several times and in different venues. To offer a broader choice this year, some of the modules have also been grouped into weekend programmes at Bonaly. You may opt into whatever modules you need and arrangements can be made for overnight accommodation if you wish to cover the full range being offered
Course fees are: £5 per Module; £10 for First Response or day packages; £30 for residential weekends. Completed forms and the appropriate fee should be sent to The Scout Centre, 15 Valleyfield Street, Edinburgh EH3 9LP, payable to South East Scotland Regional Scout Council at least two weeks before the date of the module. It will not be possible 'just to turn up' but a call to Alan Willoughby at Valleyfield Street may allow late bookings to be taken. Joining instructions will be sent to you (ideally by email). Please remember that when a number of modules are on the same day you may attend just the one(s) you need – the planned timings are outlined in this Calendar.
If you cannot find a module in the Calendar that is convenient for you please consider taking it in another Region in Scotland as publicised on the Scottish HQ website at www.scouts-scotland.org.uk. Alternatively, send a request to me by email and we may be able to arrange a special small group session for that module. Other courses that may be offered include Modules 25 – 29, Module 36 Special Needs, Skill Training and other developmental activities to support specific requests from Districts
Developing the Team
The new Regional Training Team is emerging but not yet fully up to complement. Some Leaders may wish to help with training others. If you have completed the training for your appointment and would like to help then please get in touch with me and we can discuss how you would like to do so.

Introduction
The Training Calendar for the 2009/10 Scout year in the South East Scotland Region was sent to everyone at the start of the session. As it is important that the training being offered meets what you need, additions to the programme and changes to dates and venues may be made during the year. These are notified to all Districts and Leaders through the Regional Newsletter, the regular e-mailed training newsletter and on this website.
